Thermal and spa treatment in Türkiye

Türkiye's thermal springs are used for two quite different things — licensed balneotherapy prescribed as treatment, and spa hospitality — and knowing which one a facility is offering is the whole of the decision.

01

Planning thermal and spa treatment between 50 and 75

Balneotherapy in Türkiye sits inside the medical system: facilities offering it as treatment are licensed by the Ministry of Health, protocols are supervised by physicians, and courses are prescribed over days rather than sold by the session. A hotel spa built around the same water may be pleasant and entirely legitimate without being any of those things. Both are reasonable choices; confusing them is not.

For the 50–75 group the contraindications matter and are specific. Uncontrolled hypertension, recent cardiac events, active infection and some skin conditions all make hot immersion inadvisable, and heat tolerance falls with several common medications. A facility that asks nothing about your health before booking a course is not running a clinical programme, whatever the brochure says.

Sequencing is the part people get wrong. A thermal course is usually planned over one to three weeks with rest days built in, and it combines badly with surgery in the same trip unless a physician has explicitly approved it. If the trip follows a procedure, ask the operating team — not the spa — when immersion becomes safe.

What to establish before you decide

Licensed treatment, or hospitality

Establish which one you are booking. A facility offering balneotherapy as treatment holds a Ministry of Health licence for it and can say so; a spa need not, and should not imply otherwise.

Physician supervision

Ask whether a physician assesses you before the course, sets the protocol and is available during it. For a prescribed course this is the difference that defines it.

Contraindication screening

A serious facility asks about cardiac history, blood pressure, medication and skin condition before booking. Being asked is a good sign, not an obstacle.

Water and hygiene documentation

Ask about water source, analysis and pool hygiene testing. Licensed facilities have these records; being shown them should not be difficult.

Course length and rest days

Ask how many sessions over how many days, and what happens on rest days. A course compressed into a weekend is a different thing from the one the evidence describes.

Questions to ask the facility

  1. 01Is this facility licensed for balneotherapy as medical treatment, or is it a spa?
  2. 02Which physician assesses me beforehand and sets the protocol?
  3. 03What health conditions would make you decline a booking?
  4. 04How many sessions over how many days, and how long is each immersion?
  5. 05What is the water source, and when was it last analysed?
  6. 06How is pool hygiene monitored and documented?
  7. 07Is this course safe alongside my medication, and who confirms that?
  8. 08If I have had recent surgery, when do you consider immersion safe?

Our selection process for thermal and spa treatment in Türkiye is still running. We do not recommend a provider we have not verified, so this page carries no list.

Named providers appear here once they have been through the published process — not before, and never in exchange for payment.
