Quick Answers

Is rhinoplasty in Turkey safe?

Yes, at accredited institutions with board-certified surgeons. Turkey ranks among the top three countries globally for rhinoplasty volume, and Istanbul has a high concentration of internationally trained surgeons. Surgeon selection — not country — is the variable that matters most.

Open or closed rhinoplasty — what is the difference?

Open rhinoplasty uses a small external incision on the columella for full visibility of the nasal structure. Closed uses internal incisions only with no external scar but limited access. Open is standard for more complex reshaping; closed for minor refinements. The right choice depends on your anatomy.

What is ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty?

Piezoelectric instruments sculpt nasal bone with ultrasonic vibration rather than traditional chisels, producing more precise cuts with less surrounding tissue trauma. The result is less bruising and faster early recovery. Not all surgeons are trained in the technique.

How long do I need to stay?

10–12 days minimum: surgery on day one or two, cast removal at day seven to ten, follow-up before flying. Most surgeons advise against flying for 7–10 days post-surgery due to pressure changes and monitoring needs.

When will I look normal?

Bruising resolves in 2–3 weeks. Most patients are socially presentable by week 3–4. 70% of swelling is gone by month one. The final shape — particularly tip refinement — requires 12–18 months to fully settle.

Understanding the Techniques

Open rhinoplasty

The standard approach for significant reshaping. A small incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) allows the skin to be lifted, giving the surgeon complete visibility of the cartilage and bone framework. The external scar fades to near-invisibility within 6–12 months in most cases.

Closed rhinoplasty

All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scar. Access is more limited, making the technique better suited to less complex cases — minor tip work, small dorsal reductions, or symmetry corrections that do not require significant structural change. Recovery is often slightly faster.

Ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty

Piezoelectric instruments that vibrate at ultrasonic frequency sculpt nasal bone without the blunt force of traditional osteotomes. This allows finer bone work with less disruption to surrounding soft tissue — resulting in less bruising, reduced swelling duration, and more precise bone repositioning. The technique has been widely adopted by Istanbul's leading rhinoplasty surgeons and is now standard practice at quality centres.

Septorhinoplasty

When a deviated septum causes breathing obstruction, it can be corrected in the same surgical session as aesthetic reshaping. This is one of the practical advantages of planning rhinoplasty carefully — addressing functional and aesthetic goals simultaneously. In some cases it allows partial health insurance coverage of the procedure in the patient's home country.

Recovery Week by Week

1
Surgery day

General anaesthesia. Procedure typically takes 2–4 hours. You leave with a nasal cast, internal splints or packing (depending on your surgeon's protocol), and bruising already forming. Most patients feel the anaesthesia more than the surgery itself the following morning.

2
Days 1–3: Peak swelling and bruising

Bruising and swelling peak around day 2–3. Sleep elevated. Breathing is through the mouth if internal packing was used. Pain is typically mild and managed with prescribed analgesics. The clinic is in daily contact.

3
Days 4–7: Gradual improvement

Bruising begins to yellow. Swelling softens. If internal packing is removed (typically day 3–5), breathing becomes more comfortable. You can walk comfortably from day 4 onward.

4
Days 7–10: Cast removal

The cast is removed. Your nose at this point is swollen and does not reflect the final outcome — this is important to remember. A follow-up assessment is completed and you are cleared to fly home.

5
Weeks 2–4: Social presentability

Most bruising is gone. Residual swelling makes the nose look slightly larger than it will be. Most patients return to work and social life by week 3–4. Sun exposure and contact sports are avoided for 6–8 weeks.

6
Months 1–18: The settling period

Tip swelling resolves slowly. At month three, the nose looks meaningfully improved. At month six, most of the change is visible. The final shape — particularly tip refinement — is only fully accurate at 12–18 months.

Choosing a Surgeon

Rhinoplasty is among the most technically demanding procedures in aesthetic surgery. The surgeon matters more than the clinic brand.

Board certification

In Turkey, look for surgeons certified by the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (TSPRAS) or ENT specialists with sub-specialty rhinoplasty training. Ask specifically — clinic-level accreditation does not guarantee individual surgeon qualification.

Technique matching

Your case may suit open, closed, or ultrasonic rhinoplasty. A surgeon recommending the same approach to every patient is not assessing carefully. The best surgeons discuss multiple approaches and explain the reasoning for their recommendation.

Portfolio honesty

Request before-and-after photos of cases with a similar starting anatomy to yours. Nose shapes vary significantly — results on other cases may not be achievable on your anatomy. A surgeon who only shows their best results from easy cases is not being accurate about typical outcomes.

Revision rate and complication transparency

Ask what percentage of their cases require revision and what their protocol is when they do. No surgeon's answer will be zero — an honest answer of 2–5% is more credible than none.

Recovery environment planning

Ten to twelve days is a significant stay. Where you recover shapes the experience. Well-chosen quiet accommodation near the clinic — rather than a busy city hotel — makes a meaningful difference.

What This Costs

Indicative ranges in 2026, procedure only, excluding flights and accommodation:

ProcedureTurkeyUK / Germany
Primary rhinoplasty (open)€2,500 – €5,500£5,000 – £12,000 / €5,000 – €12,000
Primary rhinoplasty (ultrasonic)€3,500 – €6,000£7,000 – £15,000 / €7,000 – €14,000
Septorhinoplasty€3,000 – €6,000£6,000 – £14,000 / €6,000 – €13,000
Revision rhinoplasty€3,500 – €7,000£8,000 – £18,000 / €8,000 – €16,000

Quoted prices should include anaesthesia, operating theatre, hospital stay (typically 1 night), and post-operative check-ups. Medications and medical tests are usually additional. Accommodation and flights from major European cities typically add €800–€1,800 for 10–12 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is rhinoplasty appropriate from?

Nasal development is typically complete by 17–18 in women and 18–19 in men. Most surgeons set 18 as a minimum, with parental consent sometimes considered for younger patients. Some surgeons prefer 21+ for complex cases.

Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

Yes, commonly with chin augmentation or fat transfer. Combining extends recovery but reduces total downtime versus separate trips. Discuss combination planning during consultation.

What is the revision rate for rhinoplasty?

Revision rates vary by surgeon experience and complexity but typically range from 5–15% in the literature. In experienced hands for primary cases, 3–8% is a credible figure. Revision rates for ethnic rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty are higher.

Will I be able to breathe properly after?

Most patients breathe normally or better after primary rhinoplasty. If you have a deviated septum causing obstruction, septorhinoplasty can improve this. Some short-term breathing difficulty is expected during swelling.

How soon can I exercise?

Light walking from day 4. No aerobic exercise for 3–4 weeks. No contact sports or activities risking nasal trauma for 6–8 weeks or until cleared by your surgeon.

Is a rhinoplasty result permanent?

Yes, with normal ageing processes continuing. The structural changes are permanent. The nose continues to change slowly with age as cartilage and skin do, but the surgical reshaping is not reversible.
